Major Achievements

 
  1. Institutional Development
    • Establishment of the Advanced Centre for Clinical Epidemiology Research and Training (ACCERT) which is a joint venture of Tuberculosis Research Centre, The Madras Medical College and the Institute of Child Health.
    •  Reorganization of the B.C.G. trial infrastructure into the Department of Epidemiology at the Tuberculosis Research Centre, Chennai.
    • Established the Department of Epidemiology in the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University.
    • Contributed to the Development of the IndiaCLEN.
    • Helped in the Development of the Epidemiology Section of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation.
    • Helped in Establishing Ethical Committees in Several Institution
  2. Education and Capacity Building
    • Developed the curriculum for M.Sc. in Epidemiology for funding by the WHO-UNDP Special Programme on tropical disease.
    • Established a Ph.D programme in the Department of Epidemiology,  The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University 
    • Started a Master’s Course in the Department of Epidemiology in The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University
    • Developed Course Material For the training in Leadership and Development in Health Research as part of the Global Core group on Leadership Development (The LAMP Programme) under the INCLEN
    • Faculty Member for a course in NCD Epidemiology at the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation
    • Trained over 400 Doctors in Tamilnadu in Research Methodology and Biostatistics and an equal number in Evidence Based Medicine
  3. Research (Major Achievements)
    • Have participated in several Clinical trials in the Chemotherapy of Tuberculosis
    • Responsible for conducting, concluding and reporting on the BCG trial in Chingleput and wrote the 15-year report
    • Organized and carried out an epidemiological evaluation of the TB programme in North Arcot, along side a sample survey for tuberculosis in the district. – Won a National Award for this.
    • Established a long-tem project on HIV infection and Tuberculosis:  This involves follow-up of a cohort of 220 HIV infected persons for clinical and immunological profile and the development of tuberculosis.
    • Coordinated a multi-centre study on the Perceptions of the Community regarding DOTS and brought out a booklet for the education of health workers
    • Carried out a multi-centric study for the development of Diagnostic Criteria in Childhood Tuberculosis
    • Carried out a large epidemiological study on Tuberculosis in Children
    • Carried out Tuberculosis Surveys in Tribal Areas in North Arcot and Madhya Pradesh.
    • Have facilitated research by several faculty members in the government service
    • Established a field programme for the development of Surveillance and control of NCDs in the community. Showed that this programme cam reduce the incidence of complications to one fourth of control level.
    • Guided the Development of a Diabetes Risk Score by the Madras Diabetes Research Centre
