PROFILE

 

A discovery research-scientist and a thought leader in the area of cardiovascular, metabolic, inflammation oncology and toxicology research and has work experience in  India and Germany since 1973.  Starting his career in discovery research, he has moved through a number of drug discovery research related roles of increasing responsibility, including Clinical development of NCEs, business development and licensing of NCEs  preclinical or clinical stage development  to various multinational companies.  In the current position as Chief Scientific Officer, Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, he has overall responsibility of both basic and clinical research related to diabetes and its complications. The most recent position held was with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd., India, where he was President Drug Discovery Research and a member of the Corporate Management Council. 

During this tenure, his team has  successfully established an operationalized  the state-of-the-art research  and Clinical Development facilities at Dr Reddys by employing careful planning and precise control with emphasis on quality, timelines and development partner satisfaction. Most important aspect of establishing full fledged animal pharmacology, GLP approved toxicology centre of excellence and other facilities in Dr Reddys.   While serving in Dr Reddys and Hoechst India Ltd., he successfully executed this with many collaborators like Novartis, Novo Nordisk, Merck, GSK, Rheoscience, ClinTec etc., and other government/academic institutes like: NIH, St Jude’s Hospital, Northwestern University, US and European Regulatory Authorities, Drug Controller General Office of India, in both Dr Reddys and Hoechst India Ltd. 

  • As a leader – through personal example, empowerment, support, and good line of communication he successfully managed the Indian and US operations.  
As a Management Council Member, he was closely associating with the Chairman, CEO and other management council members in strategizing the R & D and other business plans of Dr Reddys.  He has  good ability to articulate and implement business strategy and to communicate this to senior management and down the line to obtain support and commitment.   Dr R Rajagopalan has been acknowledged as one of the architect of Dr Reddy’s successful drug discovery team.
