The main function of the Ethics Committee is to ensure to it that the rights and welfare of human subjects are safeguarded and that the highest standards of ethical conduct are employed. Further it ensures that research using human subjects conforms to all applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations and the officially adopted policies of the Foundation. The following elements are reviewed by the EC members while evaluating a research proposal: a) Scientific design and conduct of the Studies b) Recruitment of research participants c) Care and protection of research participants d) Protection of research participant’s confidentiality and e) The Informed consent process. The Ethics committee of Madras Diabetes Research Foundation is constituted in accordance with Schedule Y of Indian Drugs & Cosmetic Act 1940 amended in 2005, Good Clinical Practice Guidelines issued by the Government of India Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (Department of Health), Ethical Guidelines for Biomedical research on human participants issued by the Indian Council of Medical Research New Delhi 2006 and ICH GCP Guidelines 1987 (amended 1990). The Ethics committee operates to the standards laid down in the ICH GCP Guidelines published in 1997 and implemented in January 1998.
